Our garden- Construction and Week 1.

I intend on making our garden a regular topic of interest on my blog but lets face it, my post are far and few between these days and I have been lacking motivation. Back in April we(and by we I mean Ryan and his brother) made two 4'x8'raised garden beds following this tutorial. We then filled them with Mel's mix and made a square foot grid out of free twine from Lowe's.

Most of our plants started out as seeds in an indoor greenhouse back in April. Although our first attempt was a flop our second yielded about 20 tomato plants, 10 bell pepper, 10 eggplant, 5 zucchini and numerous herbs. We let the plants mature a bit, gave them days outside to get used to wind and sun, and then, in late May, we picked the strongest plants and planted them into the beds along with seeds for things like lettuces, and root veggies.

When we left for vacation this is what our garden looked like.

When we came back this is what it looked like.

Here is how our grid is set up (4 squares across, 8 down):

Marigold / lavender / lavender / marigold
-----------------------------------------------------
thyme / carrots / green beans / tomato
-----------------------------------------------------
thyme / onion / green beans / tomato
-----------------------------------------------------
basil / bell peppers / spinach / tomato
-----------------------------------------------------
basil / bell peppers / salad greens / tomato
-----------------------------------------------------
strawberry/ strawberry / * / *
-----------------------------------------------------
strawberry/ eggplant / zucchini / zucchini
-----------------------------------------------------
marigold / pumpkin / tomato / marigold

* represents empty square used to accommodate large ground plants which, in this garden, is zucchini

There you have it. Our garden. Now I have to commit myself to a weekly post on garden updates.
